Letter to the Editor Overlapping of secular resonances in a Venus horseshoe orbit

چکیده

A numerical N–body integration of the asteroid (4660) Nereus over 3.5 Myr shows the presence of the Kozai resonance and two secular resonances inside a horseshoe orbit with Venus. This 1/1 mean motion resonance with Venus remains stable during the whole time span though a secular increase of the orbital inclination of the small body occurs due to the overlapping of two secular resonances, namely ν13 and ν14. This result shows that the dynamics of horseshoe orbits can be very complex since an interplay with some secular mechanisms is possible. Whether such interplay can occur frequently with Venus or the Earth and does not either affect or increase the long–term stability of this kind of orbits is still not clear and needs further investigations.

The Instability of Venus Trojans

Using Laskar’s frequency map analysis, we investigate the long-term stability of Venus Trojan orbits. By measuring the diffusion rate of proper frequencies, we outline in phase space the most stable region. It is located between 5 and 10 in proper inclination with libration amplitudes ranging from 50 to 110 . The proper eccentricity is lower than 0.13. The stable region is surrounded by secular...

Asteroids in the Inner Solar System I – Existence

Ensembles of in-plane and inclined orbits in the vicinity of the Lagrange points of the terrestrial planets are integrated for up to 100 million years. The integrations incorporate the gravitational effects of Sun and the eight planets (Pluto is neglected). Mercury is the least likely planet, as it is unable to retain tadpole orbits over 100 million year timescales. Mercurian Trojans probably d...

Secular spin dynamics of inner main-belt asteroids

Understanding the evolution of asteroid spin states is challenging work, in part because asteroids have a variety of orbits, shapes, spin states, and collisional histories but also because they are strongly influenced by gravitational and non-gravitational (YORP) torques. Using efficient numerical models designed to investigate asteroid orbit and spin dynamics, we study here how several individ...
